Most of my coastal landscapes begin with one of hundreds of reference photos I have taken in my hometown of Pensacola, Florida. I feel connected to it in a way that I am not really able to put into words. I love the soft crystal white sugar sand, the ocean, the sounds and smells, all of it, even how hot it gets. I think when you grow up there, it becomes a part of you in a way. Or maybe that’s just me. I’m not much of a morning person, but I sometimes even voluntarily wake for sunrise at the beach.
The photos are usually abandoned at some point, the paintings take on their own direction, guided by memories at every age and stage of my life. In this place I can feel the simpleness of childhood, and all the highs and lows of growing up. I find comfort in the nearness I feel to a Heavenly Father who cares to begin and end each day with an display of vibrant color impossible to replicate.
